A little clarity
Questions, answered.
How CarLink ID, privacy, and alerts work—without the guesswork.
Getting started
What is a CarLink ID?
It is a unique QR contact tag for your car. Someone can scan it with a phone camera to send you a private note without seeing your phone number.
Does a visitor need the CarLink app?
No. A phone camera opens the CarLink ID contact page; the visitor does not need an account or app to send a note.
Privacy
Will a visitor see my phone number?
No. CarLink routes the contact through its private inbox so your number is not displayed to the visitor.
How long are conversations kept?
Conversation-linked notes and replies are scheduled for deletion 30 days after the conversation’s last activity. An owner can delete a conversation sooner. See the Privacy Policy for details about other records.
Using a CarLink ID
What can a visitor send?
They can choose a reason, such as lights left on or a parking issue, and optionally add a short note. If chat is available, the conversation stays linked to that CarLink ID.
Can I turn contact off for one CarLink ID?
Yes. Owners can switch each ID’s contact availability independently. Turning one off does not switch off your other CarLink IDs.
Plans and activity
What does Plus scan activity show?
For an active Plus CarLink ID, the owner can see recent scan times and counts. CarLink uses a masked network address and a per-ID pseudonymous identifier to group activity and support abuse controls. This does not identify a person or show precise location.
Notifications
Do scanners need to enable browser notifications?
No. A scanner can send a note without enabling notifications. They may optionally enable reply alerts to hear when the owner responds. Owners have a separate setup: each CarLink ID needs at least one connected, verified owner device to accept visitor notes.
Safety
Is CarLink an emergency service?
No. CarLink is for everyday car-contact situations, not emergencies. Contact local emergency services directly when someone is in immediate danger.
